Welcome to the Rileys was a real pain for Kristen Stewart—literally.

In the much buzzed about indie flick, she plays a 16-year-old stripper who is taken in by a married man, played by James Gandolfini...

"I did some pole dancing," Stewart told me Saturday at the movie's premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. "I got bruises all over my legs. I tore myself up doing it. It sucked."

Oddly enough, she kinda enjoyed it. "The more I saw it, the more I wanted it," Stewart said. "It was like a weird self-hating kind of thing."

'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart poised to be Miss Sundance 2010

There are some very hot stars heading for the Sundance Film Festival, held in snowy Park City, Utah, which runs from Thursday, Jan. 21 through the end of the month.

"Gossip Girl" hunk Chace Crawford, Katie Holmes, Dakota Fanning, "Mad Men" star John Hamm, Kate Mara, Malin Akerman, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba and Julia Robert's niece, Emma Roberts will be making the trek up the slopes to support their indie films

But "Twilight Saga" star Kristen Stewart has two films at the festival -- she plays 80's rocker Joan Jett in "The Runaways" and a troubled stripper in "Welcome to the Riley's" -- which puts her in the running to be Miss Sundance 2010, according to our cinema scooper Greg Ellwood.

Kristen Stewart #21

Kristen Stewart is an industry vet, and she’s not even 20 years old. The actress was playing Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room when kids her age were getting their first paper routes. But unlike Haley Joel Osment, Stewart has made the transition from child star to adult actress look relatively easy, namely thanks to her high-profile role as Bella Swan in the big-screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight.

When the film hit theaters in November 2008, she and costar Robert Pattinson experienced the same kind of unnerving immediate rise to fame that Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet experienced post-Titanic. Posters of Stewart suddenly became makeshift wallpaper inside locker doors in high schools across America, or they substituted as dartboards for all those females who were envious of her onscreen and rumored off-screen time with Pattinson, much to Stewart’s dismay. “I don’t want to be a movie star like Angelina Jolie,” Stewart told BlackBook magazine. “Nothing about being a celebrity is desirable. I’m an actor. It’s bizarre to me that everybody’s so obsessive.”

Kristens Welcome to the Rileys som visas på Sundance om bara några dagar (första visningen nu på lördag) är listad på "The 5 Films Likeliest to Ignite a Sundance Bidding War". Så här står det om filmen:

Welcome to the Rileys
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A couple (James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo) mourning the death of

their teenage daughter in dramatically different ways attempt to rebuild their lives.
UPSIDE: Jake Scott’s feature directorial debut is all class, with the executive-producer imprimatur of father Ridley Scott and uncle Tony (not to mention Ridley’s collaborator Steven Zaillian) and a cast featuring James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo and Kristen Stewart as a teenaged prostitute in New Orleans. OK, mostly all class.
DOWNSIDE: Could turn out to be this year’s The Greatest, which fizzled at Sundance ‘09 with a similar story line and Big Actor Moments cranked to 11.
POTENTIAL BUYERS: Overture, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate
HOW MUCH? The bidding starts at $4.5 million.

Just what we need: An antidote to dumbed-down rom-coms and dick flicks. The Runaways is "one of the most piquantly feminist films to touch down this year," Chris Lee writes for the LA Times. He also calls it:

…A punk- infused genre pic with a pronounced generational viewpoint and no shortage of blood, drug abuse and bodily effluvia.

Sounds awesome. What more could you want?!

The film is written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, "a striking woman with a mane of raven-black hair who was clad in a vampire-chic, all-black ensemble." (You may know her as the director of such goth-tastic videos as Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" and Christina Aguilera's "Fighter.") According to Lee, It's not a band movie, per se, but: "an impressionistic character study illuminating a unique female predicament: What happens when teenage girls get handed too much, too soon via worldwide rock stardom?"

The Runaways will finally debut at Sundance next week, so we're slowly but surely getting some more details on the film and its writer/director Floria Sigismondi. The Italian-born music video creator (Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People," Christina Aguilera's "Fighter") talked with the L.A Times about the film and what she hopes to accomplish with telling the story of the first popular all-girl band.
"It's young girls getting swept up into a world they couldn't handle," Sigismondi told the paper. "Feeding on those confusing feelings that develop from moving from girl to woman, I could reach deep into myself to find those things."
Sigismodni said the film focuses mostly on Joan Jett and Cherie Curie, played, of course, by Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning to illustrate, "How different they are, how they were drawn together for this crazy experience. Joan is so focused, she really wanted to have this band. And Cherie wanted the rage of rock 'n' roll, the rebellion.

And what else happens between them? "A make-out scene in a roller rink that takes place about two-thirds of the way through the movie." The L.A Times writes:

The scene was inspired by a remark Currie made in the rockumentary Edgeplay: A Film About the Runaways, made by former band member Victory Tischler-Blue.
"In Edgeplay,'"Cherie mentions that Joan is really good in bed," Sigismondi said. "I thought, 'I have to pry into this a bit. It will cause an explosion in the film. Why not go there?'

We salute you, Floria Sigismondi. But not for the make out alone — the film has an overall feminist theme, following young women from adolsence into adulthood, but with the address pressure of misogyny, drugs and sex in the world of rock and roll.
There's also the fact that Kristen Stewart is portraying a musical icon who happens to also be gay. The Times writes that she does so very convincingly.

In the film, Stewart convincingly channels something of Jett's androgynous, take-no-guff demeanor and rock star swagger. "She has completely embodied the character of Joan," Sigismondi said. "Her body language, her face, her walk. It's amazing how she has just become her." Production designer Eugenio Caballero was even more blunt. "Kristen is Joan," he said in between scenes. "You talk with her and you think it's Joan Jett."

The Runaways will open in 1400 theaters nationwide in mid-March. Do you think the kissing scene between Joan and Cherie will take away from the message of the film in the mainstream media?
